Otters Gone Wild
This girl was delighted beyond words when the otters at Lafayette’s Colombian Park Zoo decided to make a visit to the glass. I had my camera at my side but it was mounted with a 70-300 zoom lens. Any zoom lens will give you a shallow depth of field, especially from up-close. When I spotted the swimming otters, I switched to shutter priority at 1/1250 of a second and high-speed continual shooting. I stepped back about ten feet, focused on the glass and then turned off the auto-focus switch on the lens. I then moved the camera forward about 3 inches (to focus just behind the glass) and started shooting. Despite the thin focal plane, I managed to capture a number of sharp photos including the one below.
