We stopped by the new studio on Main Street last night.   I’ll start moving in equipment as soon as my schedule allows.    I’m excited to be sharing the space with graphic artists R3 Design and Anne Berry.  It’s going to be a great spot for professional headshots, senior and group photos.  I can’t wait!_09A8730 _09A8744

New Photography Logo!

April 13, 2015 By admin Leave a Comment

I’m very pleased to unveil a new photography logo.  It was created by R3 Design, Goshen and will be used on my website, business cards, apparell and as a photo watermark.  Rafael at R3 purposefully kept me involved throughout the process.  His approach made sure the final design met my every need.   I was thrilled with the results.  I recommend his services to anyone who wants to explore a new logo for their business.
I love how it looks on photos!

Hawks Update – My Final Round of Photos 03_24_15

April 5, 2015 By admin Leave a Comment

I took these photos  a few days before move-in day at the Hawks in Goshen.   New of the new photos include  exterior, morning and night photos as well at interior photos of the common areas.   Congradulations to both LaCasa and DJ Construction for doing a great job on this building.   Watching and photographing the progress made for an amazing experience.

Chicago Bean Photos

March 30, 2015 By admin Leave a Comment

“Will you marry me?” were the words spoken from a man on one knee at Chicago’s “Bean” in Millenium Park.  “Yes!” was the answer.  A crowd of strangers erupted in cheers as one guy yelled “run!”

This was my first visit to The Bean.  I had come for photography but was treated to so much more.   People from all over the world united with excitement, smiles and cell phones posed for selfies.   As I awaited the sun’s descent, I happily assisted with photos as strangers handed me their phones and other image producing electronic contraptions.   One Chicago man simply hung-out and chatted with everyone at this wonderful sculpture his hometown had provided all of us.

Photography wise, The Bean is amazing.   The shiny bean, which resides in Millenium Park, is strategically located at the north west corner of Grant Park.  Its position, adjacent to tall buildings on both the west and north sides, provides for excellent reflections of the skyline.    While reflection is an often underused element in photography, there is no denying it at The Bean!

Photography Notes:   Tri-pod mounted,  20 second exposure, f13, ISO 100,  taken 35 minutes after sunset.  No filters or color enhancements. Contact me to inquire about prints.

Sunsets and Foregrounds

March 17, 2015 By admin 1 Comment

“Sunsets are for looking at, not taking photos of.”  This is what I proudly tell people. If that isn’t annoying enough, I sometimes follow that up with…  “sunsets generally make good backgrounds but not good main subjects.”   By this time, the chances are good that I’ve completely ruined that person’s sunset.

Goshen Dam Pond SunsetSeriously, instead of taking time to shoot a photo that you’ll never look at again, why not instead just enjoy the moment?     This is what I was thinking, as I admired Monday’s sunset from the vantage point of our sunroom window, next to the Goshen Dam Pond.     As I enjoyed the amazing colors evolve in the evening sky,  I found my focus shifting to the surface of the water.   The evening winds had shaped perfect waves that frolicked in the sky’s light, creating a perfect foreground.   I grabbed my camera, and my non-sunset-photo-mantra quickly went out the window.     To get the most out of the watery foreground, I positioned my camera as close to the surface of the water as possible, without getting wet, and fired off multiple shots.  While each shot had the same basic composition, each also had a unique set of reflections.

Camera Settings:
1/50 sec  ISO 1000  f8.0   -1.2/3 exp comp.    I chose a 1/50 shutter speed for two reasons.  This was slow capture as much light as possible while still allowing me to hand-hold the shot and avoid shutter blur.  The second reason is that I wanted to freeze the awesome looking waves.  A long exposure on a tri-pod would allow for a lower ISO but would have ruined the look of the waves.

An Afternoon of Fishing

My Photo Philosophy

Today's editing software allows for manipulation of photos well into the realm of the ridiculous. That said, post-production editing is an important aspect of the photography process. When done right, editing can make photos look more like how we see the world with our own eyes.

Slight photo enhancements are okay but fakes are not.
